If you’re searching for a short yet breathtaking hike, the Cascade River Loop is a must-visit. Known for its mesmerizing root beer-colored waterfalls that cascade down toward Lake Superior, this trail is what we like to call a “high value hike”—offering immense beauty in a brief time.
Getting Started
The hike begins conveniently from Highway 61, where you can park just east of Cascade Lodge. From there, you can choose to explore the trail on either side of the river. For a shorter, rewarding experience, we recommend the Lower Loop, which takes you inland along the river before crossing back over. If you’re up for more adventure, the trail extends for miles, giving you even more opportunities to soak in the natural beauty.
The Cascade River Loop: A Natural Marvel
On the Lower Loop, the trail runs parallel to the Cascade River, dropping an impressive 120 feet in elevation over a short distance. This creates a dramatic series of waterfalls, gorges, and rapids that make this hike truly memorable.
Several viewpoints, including wooden platforms and bridges, allow you to stop and admire the powerful cascades from different angles. You’ll cross the river on a sturdy wooden bridge that not only offers a crossing but also an excellent vantage point to view the rushing water and volcanic rock gorge below.
Why Is the Water Root Beer-Colored?
One of the unique features of this hike is the river’s rich amber-brown color. This “root beer” hue comes from tannins—organic compounds that originate from the bark, leaves, and wood in the surrounding forest. Combined with the green mosses and ferns lining the water’s edge, the river creates a striking contrast with the surrounding nature.
Rocky Areas for Exploration
If you’re feeling adventurous, take time to explore some of the rocky outcroppings just off the trail. These spots offer a different perspective of the river and cascades, and they are perfect for taking in the serenity and power of the water up close.
Don’t Miss Lake Superior
After completing the loop, be sure to cross over Highway 61 and visit the stunning shoreline of Lake Superior. Whether you’re skipping stones, picnicking on the cobblestone shore, or just watching the waves crash, this area is a fantastic way to unwind after your hike. The river’s mouth is also a popular spot for fishing, making it an all-around outdoor paradise.
Getting There
If you’re coming from Tofte, head north on Highway 61 for approximately 16 miles along the stunning Lake Superior shoreline. As you approach Cascade River State Park, pass the main park entrance and continue driving for about half a mile. Look for the parking areas on either side of the highway, just east of Cascade Lodge. Once you’ve parked, you can access the trailhead on either side of the river. To begin the Lower Loop hike, follow the trail inland along the river from the parking area for an unforgettable adventure.
