Discover the Scenic Trail from Temperance River to Carlton Peak

One of our favorite hikes in the Tofte area is the trek from Temperance River to Carlton Peak. This popular trail offers an immersive experience in nature, combining the beauty of the river with the challenge of a steady climb to breathtaking vistas.

The Journey Begins: Temperance River

The trailhead is conveniently located at the roadside parking area at Temperance River. The adventure starts by following the river, where you’ll encounter numerous waterfalls and the dramatic river gorge. This section is often bustling with fellow nature enthusiasts, but as you leave the river behind, the trail becomes less crowded.

The Climb to Carlton Peak

Once the trail veers away from the river, it starts to climb the ridges towards Carlton Peak, progressively getting steeper. The effort is well worth it, as the views from the top of Carlton Peak are some of the best around. You’ll be rewarded with nearly 360-degree panoramas, making this 6-mile round-trip hike to the summit and back a perfect afternoon excursion.

Alternative Route: Britton Peak Parking Lot

For those seeking a different approach, Carlton Peak can also be accessed from the Britton Peak Parking Lot for a 3.4 mile out-and-back hike. This route offers a hike through beautiful boreal forests, gradually climbing for the first mile before becoming steeper near the peak.

Don’t Miss the Tofte Overlook

While Carlton Peak is a stunning destination, we also highly recommend checking out the Tofte Overlook. This short spur trail off the main Superior Hiking Trail is located to the east of Carlton Peak (so if you’re hiking from Temperance River you’ll need to continue hiking a bit past Carleton Peak to reach the trail). In our opinion, it boasts even better views than Carlton Peak, offering a 360-degree panorama that includes the Sawtooth Mountains, Lake Superior, and the vast expanse of the Superior National Forest.
